Javier Pérez-Osorio’s (he/him) research interests dwell in the intersection between film studies, queer cinema and decolonial thinking in Latin America. He holds a PhD in Film and Screen Studies from the University of Cambridge. From a decolonial perspective, his doctoral thesis delves into innovative narrative and formal strategies used to depict queer experiences in fiction films produced in the twentieth century and, through them, the encounters between global and local modes of queer representation. Javier also holds an MA in Film and Film Cultures from the University of Leicester and a BA in Philosophy and Theology from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Colombia).

Javier’s work has been published and disseminated in English and Spanish, including the journal Queer Studies in Media & Popular Culture, the European Review of Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and Canaguaro: Revista de cine colombiano. Javier has a forthcoming chapter in The Edinburgh Companion to Queer Reading and two special issues for Alphaville and the Bulletin of Latin American Studies. Javier also co-coordinates Red Cu, an independent research-led network focused on queer studies applied to visual cultures of Colombia and Latin America, with Dr Karol Valderrama-Burgos (University of St Andrews).

Teaching

Javier currently teaches modules on varied subjects of Latin American Cinema and Literature, with a focus on queer narratives and aesthetics.
