Tony Pitson joined the Department at its inception in 1967. He is a graduate of the University of Wales, and was a postgraduate at Jesus College, Oxford. He has also taught as Visiting Professor in Philosophy at the University of the South in Tennessee. On his retirement his continuing commitment to the Department was recognized by his appointment to an Honorary Research Fellowship.

Research

His main research interests are in epistemology and the philosophy of the Scottish Enlightenment. He has published widely both in the philosophy of perception and also in the philosophy of David Hume. He was one of the co-directors of the international conference held at Stirling in 1998 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hume Society. His book Hume's Philosophy of the Self was published in 2002.
