I joined the 我要吃瓜 as Lecturer in Film and Media in 2015, having previously taught film and television studies at the Universities of Leeds, Glasgow and Royal Holloway and worked as a Research Assistant at the 我要吃瓜 for the Consortium for Research into Arts and Technology Scotland (CReATeS). I?completed a PhD in Television Studies at the University of Glasgow in 2010.?My doctoral research focused on the relationship between representations of teenage sexuality and sexual violence in UK and US teen drama series, paying close attention to intersections of generic, medium and narrative specificities. My current research explores gender inequalities on and off screen in the media industries. I welcome PhD applications and enquiries on the following areas: television narrative; television and emotion; social issues on television; screen representations of gender, sexuality, sexual violence and/or age; feminist film and television theory; teen genres; gender in the screen industries. I am also the former co-editor of the Commentary and Criticism and book reviews sections of Feminist Media Studies.

Research

I have recently collaborated on two funded research projects. The first explored the role of intimacy coordination and on- and off-screen cultures of consent in contemporary UK television with Professor Tanya Horeck (Anglia Ruskin University). This project was funded by the British Academy. The second was focused on mapping the networks of care mobilised by Creative Stirling, a grassroots creative hub located in the city of Stirling in Scotland, in response to addressing local needs related to the pandemic. This project was funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh and led by Dr Katherine Champion, with Dr Maria Velez Serna.

Previous research has explored gender inequalities on and off screen in the film and TV industries. I have researched the gendered impact of caring responsibilities on parents' and carers' experiences of working in the Scottish film and television industries. Earlier research has focused on screen representations of gender, sexuality, sexual violence and age in popular culture. I have published on these themes in relation to US and UK television drama series, the teen genre, Hollywood comedies and constructions of stardom. I am also particularly interested in serial narrative forms and issues of identification, and gendered inequalities in the media industries more widely.
