Abstract
Although there is discussion overthevalue and needofcultures intheeraofculture-independent techniques, it is apparent that viable bacterial cells are valuable to culture collections, and for a wide rangeofbiotechnological procedures, including vaccine production, and as probiotics. Yet,thevalueofstock cultures, which may be years old, may be questioned as there is often little relationship to freshly isolated cells, which are often smaller and have greater bioactive potential than their stored counterparts.
