MAP Behaviour Change: Competency Based Training in Individual Level Support for Behaviour Change for Nurse-Leads in St Helena

Funded by .

Saint Helena is a remote inhabited island, lying in the south Atlantic Ocean approximately 1500 miles east of South Africa. It is a middle-income country with a population of just over 4,500 people and is English-speaking. The burden of disease for St Helena is largely attributable to high levels of non-communicable diseases (NCD) such as cancer, diabetes (T2), cardiovascular disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (UK Gov, 2010). This proposal is for funding for development, data collection, evaluation, analysis and dissemination of data from the St Helena Nurse leads MAP behaviour change training project. The project aims to develop, deliver and evaluate a culturally appropriate and flexible short (2 week) training programme in individual level support for health behaviour change, including mentoring and skills development for all nurse leads in St Helena. It will also contribute to development of appropriate systems and processes by which the training can be sustained in this context. The project will help researchers to develop a template for similar training to be delivered in low and middle income countries.
