Multimodal data analysis for monitoring invasive aquatic weeds in India

Collaboration with International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, National Institute of Plant Health Management (India), Sanatana Dharma College and University of Strathclyde.

Invasive aquatic weeds such as water hyacinth are an important problem in many parts of the world, including India. Early detection of weed regrowth after manual or mechanical removal can help to greatly reduce the cost of keeping water bodies free of the weed. However, in areas where there are many scattered and neglected water bodies present, early detection through manual surveys is difficult. This project will investigate the potential use of multi-modal data (satellite, drone, and ground-level IoT sensor data) for early detection of water hyacinth regrowth.
