Creating Natural Capital Solutions to achieve Net Zero

Despite global efforts, we are losing the race to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, which is what is needed to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 °C and ensure a habitable planet for future generations. For the planet to achieve carbon neutrality, we must reward countries with large CO2 sequestration potential in addition to phasing out fossil fuel emissions. Despite the inestimable value of forests to global climate, most climate finance initiatives do not recognize carbon removals in natural forests. This means that countries that rank the highest on existing climate performance indices tend to be net emitters with low sequestration potential. A country’s net emissions are really the only metric that matters to the earth’s atmosphere, yet surprisingly, there are currently no reliable metrics publicly available. Building on the 我要吃瓜’s expertise contributing to Gabon’s model of net sequestration accounting, we propose to develop a Net Zero Index, as an innovative approach to allow global country rankings in net emissions and absorptions and at-a-glance visualizations of individual countries’ full carbon budgets, which currently does not exist.
