Feasibility Study - Exploitation of satellite remote sensing for regulation and monitoring of inland and coastal water quality

Funded by .

?70K of funding from NERC to conduct a feasibility study:

“The overarching objective of this fellowship is to promote and facilitate the use of satellite remote sensing for improved regulatory monitoring of inland and nearshore coastal water quality at environment agencies in Scotland (Scottish Environment Protection Agency, SEPA), England (Environment Agency, EA) and Northern Ireland (Northern Ireland Environment Agency, NIEA). Satellite technology has been used to monitor the Earth for over 30 years, but with the recent launch of the ESA Sentinel 2 mission it is now possible to observe water quality in near-real time at mesoscale spatial resolution. This technological advancement provides the opportunity to deliver the first operational system for regulatory end-user exploitation. This proposal was supported by the Satellite Applications Catapult.
