Research

My academic interest since the mid 1960s has been in exploring the nature of change in the forms, functions and organisation of the distribution sector and retailing in particular. In recent years this has involved research into aspects of international retailing and the cultural influences on the transfer of retail expertise. Empirical studies have been undertaken in Europe and Asia funded from a range of governmental, research council and public agency sources. This work has explored some of the forms of innovation and marketing within the different internationalisation strategies used by retailers. Research Group: Institute for Retail Studies.Recent research projects, several of which have involved doctoral students, include:

Accessing Healthy Food: A Sentinel Mapping Study of Healthy Food Retailing in Scotland ( funded by Food Standards Agency Scotland, Aberdeen) in co-operation with colleagues from Universities of Stirling, Edinburgh, Dundee and Queen Mary, London. The application in retailing of intelligent systems using fuzzy logic (funded by Research Agencies in Spain) in co-operation with colleagues from ESADE Barcelona and Politechnic University of Catalonia. Strategies of international retailers and knowledge transfer (funded by Japan Ministry of Education) in co-operation with colleagues at Universities of Stirling, Lund and UMDS, Kobe. The development, production and analyses of a retail sales index in Scotland (funded by Royal Bank of Scotland) in co-operation with colleagues from University of Edinburgh. Comparisons of the use of CRM by Japanese and UK retailers (funded by Japan Ministry of Education) with colleagues at Kobe University. Historical aspects of retail strategy in uk and Japanese electrical goods retailing (funded by Japan Ministry of Education)in co-operation with a colleague at Saitama University.
