Abstract
Men constitute 11 per cent ofScotland’s nursing workforce,yet they make up 27.6 per centof senior management.Major research into genderand nursing career progressioncompleted at Edinburgh NapierUniversity last year exploredthe hypothesis that women’scareer trajectories put themat a disadvantage.The research was conducted intwo phases. The first involved aquantitative analysis of the workpatterns of 65,781 nurses inScotland between 2000 and 2008.Gender, employment grades,number and length of careerbreaks, length of service, age,working patterns, and numberand age of dependent childrenwere examined to identify thefactors that influence women’scareer outcomes.
