Abstract
First paragraph: Cyanobacteria, from diverse aquatic and terrestrial habitats, are well recognised as producers of an extensive range of potent toxins (cyanotoxins) which present hazards to animal and human health (Metcalf and Codd, 2012). Case histories of environmental acute intoxications involving exposure to toxigenic cyanobacteria, post-event pathology and cyanotoxin analysis of environmental cyanobacterial and tissue samples have all contributed to the identification of cyanotoxins as proximal causality agents (Buratti et al., 2017, Svircev et al., 2017). Experimental exposure of laboratory animals, cell cultures and enzymes to extracts of axenic monocyanobacterial cultures have provided much evidence of the actions of specific toxins of cyanobacterial origin (Metcalf and Codd, 2012).
