Abstract
This article places James VI's Highland policy, and more specifically the Statutes of Iona, within a 'British' or archipelagic context which, I argue, is crucial to understanding the statutes in terms of Stuart policy toward its more remote regions. By placing the statues in a wider context, I am to highlight how an appreciation of the archipelagic situation can inform understanding of the Scottish situation.
