Abstract
First paragraph: Vaginal examination (VE) is one of the most commonly performed procedures in maternity care, routinely carried out on admission to the labour ward or birth unit. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends offering a VE to confirm established labour and every four hours during established first stage of labour. In our study, we found that women experienced on average three VEs (and up to seven) during their labour.
