Abstract
In this interactive workshop led by core members of the LGBTQ+ Dementia Advisory Group, we will gently challenge attendees’ views of person-centred care and equality to provoke thought and reflection about what it means to care for an LGBTQ+ person living with dementia at home and when moving to a care home. Throughout the workshop, our core members with lived experience will provide insight into their lived truths.
Following a “Power and Privilege” ice-breaker, in which we will invite attendees to privately consider their own privileges in society, we will lead a two-part workshop in cabaret-style groups.
In the first part, we will consider a patient pathway from home to care home, and discuss three key milestones in the process as food for thought on potential negative experiences and how these can be avoided and improved. Our core members with lived experience will provide insight into their experiences of interacting with health and social care professionals and why celebrating their identity is so important.
In the second part, we will pose the question, “Can cisgender heteronormative carers provide person-centred care for LGBTQ+ people living with dementia?” After discussion within groups, we will come together to highlight common themes.
Finally, we will reflect on what we have covered and collaboratively produce 5 takeaways that attendees can share with friends, colleagues, and, most importantly, those they care for.
