Abstract
Dr. Darren Elliott-Smith (Senior Lecturer in Film and Gender and Videographer) will guide students in this workshop through the theory and practice of the innovative Video Essay form (using film itself to analyse film).
The session will begin with a clip-led history of the origins of the Video Essay in the Film Essay (including examples from key filmmakers like Maya Deren, Laura Mulvey, and Chris Marker), we will then consider the various audio-visual techniques that established Video Essayists utilise in their often poetic and critical analyses of film and the moving image. As Videographer and Film Academic, Darren will visually demonstrate their practice of analysing and constructing Video Essay work.
Some examples of Darren’s work can be found here.
