Abstract
First paragraph: Globally, alcohol use is associated with substantial health, economic, and social burdens (Cukier et al., 2018; GBD 2016 Alcohol Collaborators, 2018; Ranaweera et al., 2018). Alcohol is a major contributor to disability-adjusted-life-years (Peacock et al., 2018), injuries, and mortality (Rehm et al., 2017). Alcohol misuse is a significant public health issue in the United Kingdom (UK) (Balakrishnan, Allender, Scarborough, Webster, & Rayner, 2009), placing considerable strain on both financial and medical resources (Williams et al., 2018). Scotland registered the highest rate of alcohol-specific deaths in the UK in 2018, with 20.8 deaths per 100,000 people (Office for National Statistics, 2019). Alcohol consumption accounted for 8% of the burden of disease and an estimated 3,705 deaths in Scotland in 2015, with cancer and liver disease the top causes of alcohol-related deaths (Tod et al., 2018)
