Abstract
This chapter explores the twentieth-century emergence of non-fictional sub-Saharan African travel narratives. Anchored in a discussion of Nigerien Damouré Zika's Journal de voyage, it explores the historical reasons for the apparaent paucity of examples of this genre in the African context. At the same time, it maps some of the key accounts that do exist and points to current and future trends.
