Abstract
This paper surveys the political and cultural tensions which affected the development of heritage commemoration and association with the battle of Bannockburn (1314), focussing on the two key centenery anniversaries of 1814 and 1914 (and intervening years) to illustrate how this iconic and defining moment of Scottish historywas hotly contested.
