Abstract
While most young people in the UK leave compulsory education and enter positive destinations, such as work, training or further and higher education; a significant number are not making this successful transition or are not finding a job or a career path that they aspire to or particularly value. Disadvantaged young people in the UK (such as those who lack qualifications or those living in poverty) face many barriers in the labour market including the contraction of the economy and labour market because of the economic recession, recruitment freezes, increasing competition from more skilled job applicants who are competing for low-skilled jobs, and recruitment practices relying on informal contacts and recommendation. The focus of this chapter is on disadvantaged young people in Scotland, aged 16–24, making the transition from unemployment to employment.
