Abstract
This paper reports on phase 2 of an on-going research project which aims to improve music performance within a pedagogic setting in secondary schools. It arises from a concern that although trainee music teachers develop a range of functional skills, they exhibit a distinct absence of stage craft in live performance, raising questions about their ability to teach this essential element of arts education to school pupils. The paper begins by sketching the background to the project in terms of salient research literature, summarizing the first phase of the project and presenting the outcomes of phase 2. The main focus of the paper however, is the development of the theme; this time to report on what occurred when the trainees applied the principles of performance pedagogy during school placement. We describe a range of contexts and what the trainees did to teach performance to their pupils. Both the process and content of performance pedagogy will be included. The outcome is a more systematic formulation of methodology to teach performance; we consequently conclude with a formalised framework for performance pedagogy and assess its potential in a range of learning contexts.
