Abstract
First paragraph: Thirty one years ago, Professor Macfie addressed the Scottish Economic Society on the subject of the Scottish Tradition in Economic Thought. In that address (Macfie, 1955), he made the case that the attitude and method which characterised early Scottish economic thought were distinctive, that they had had an important influence on the subsequent development of the discipline, and that they were still recognisable in the work of twentieth century Scottish economists. Professor Macfie further argued that economics as generally practised had diverged unduly from the Scottish tradition; a Scottish revival was thus warranted.
