Abstract
This chapter reports the results of 4 studies of collaborative problem solving supported by various forms of video-mediated communication (VMC). The authors analyze task outcome, the process of communication, and the user's reactions to the technologies with similar data obtained from face-to-face interactions. VMC was not found to deliver all the advantages observed from face-to-face interactions. Possible reasons for this are explored, as well as the implications of the data for evaluation techniques.
