Abstract
This article draws on Françoise Vergès' notion of the colonial family romance to explore the evolution of the pied-noir community's relation to the French mainland and to the heroic father figure of de Gaulle, as the end of the Algerian war turned hopes of salvation to fears of betrayal and abandonment. With reference to André Téchiné's 1994 film, Les Roseaux sauvages, it traces how French society reconfigures to reject the notion of the patriarchal saviour, and its imperial identity, as it moves towards the watershed of 1968.
