Abstract
First paragraph: Physical activity has an important role to play in making the Scottish population healthier. Raising levels of physical activity is of relevance to a number of national outcomes, indicators and targets outlined in the Scottish Government's National Performance Framework. The Scottish Government's physical activity strategy Let's make Scotland more Active (2003) set minimum recommended levels of physical activity for children and adults, and targets for achievement by 2022. Walking, cycling, play and other leisure pursuits in the outdoor environment are types of physical activity that can contribute to these recommended levels. In addition, the outdoor environment is now seen as a key setting for the promotion of good mental health and wellbeing.
