Abstract
The paper discusses the hardware and software required for the automation of data collection from a weather station. The variety of sensors and the combination of types of sensor responses requires an intelligent system. The software needs to cope with these various permutations and to enable data collection and storage at a variety of time scales. The second half of the paper reports on the work undertaken at Lampeter under the Microcomputer Environmental Probes Project (MEPP) which has successfully interfaced the campus weather station with a BBC microcomputer. Details of the hardware system and software suite developed are provided and discussion of the problems encountered and the potential uses in education are presented.
