Abstract
First paragraph: In both academic and popular literature about Scottish sport relatively little attention has been paid to women's experiences of Scotland's sporting culture. This article offers a preliminary overview of some of the ways in which women participate in and contribute to sport in an attempt to open up the existing discourses about sport in Scotland. The discussion draws on previous historical and sociological analyses of Scottish sport, and also on the wider international feminist scholarship about sport. A third dimension is that the paper connects the study of women's sport in Scotland with the social and historical scholarship about women in Scotland.
