Abstract
Quebec offers a useful model of secession for nationalist parties in Western democracies, in using the referendum process as the mechanism to secede through consent. This article examines the prospects of the Scottish National Party adopting the Quebec referendum model in post-devolution Scotland. It uses Quebec as a comparator to identify the constitutional and electoral constraints on the SNP's pursuit of an independence referendum and explore alternative roads to autonomy other than the referendum model. It also looks at the effect of choosing independence versus fiscal autonomy on the internal conflicts within the SNP.
