Abstract
First paragraph: In a presentation at the recent National Association for Language Development in the Curriculum (NALDIC) annual conference, the keynote speaker, Pauline Gibbons, made an argument for looking at the kinds of environments that enhance learning. According to Gibbons, it's important to establish ‘high challenge/high support classrooms which offer environments to intellectually challenge children or learners to do more than just reproduce the knowledge that other people have constructed’ (2009: 5). She explicitly argues against ‘simplifying’ because such practices restrict what is available to be learned.
