Abstract
In the late spring of 2006, Vancouver, Canada was the site of the 17th International Conference on the Reduction of Drug Related Harm. Vancouver nurses, together with their international nursing colleagues, organized the first nursing satellite associated with the International Harm Reduction Association conference. The theme of the satellite conference was “Here and Now: Harm Reduction in Nursing Practice”. The satellite created a forum for nurses to “hear” the experiences of their colleagues and to learn and continue to advance nursing practice within a context of harm reduction—“now.” The importance of this satellite in highlighting harm reduction in nursing practice was achieved through the sharing of nursing research and practice from diverse settings. The presentations and discussion highlighted future directions for nurses to decrease a broad range of harms to individuals and communities affected by substance use.
