Abstract
Pyruvate kinase (PK) isozyme electrophoretic patterns were obtained from extracts of Atlantic salmon liver, kidney, white muscle, red muscle, brain, heart, gill, spleen and caeca. PK isozymes were identified in the plasma of selenium-deficient and pancreas-diseased Atlantic salmon. The source of the PK in each case was shown from the isozyme pattern to be from skeletal muscle. By comparison with control fish plasma PK activity was increased and liver glutathione peroxidase activity decreased in Atlantic salmon with pancreas disease. Although plasma, liver and white muscle vitamin E levels were reduced in Atlantic salmon having pancreas disease, these levels were well in excess of those likely to be responsible for muscle damage.
